Phototherapy (Narrow Band UV-B)

Phototherapy and the Healing Power of Light

Since the earliest of times, when sunlight was the only source, it has been recognized that light can heal. Over time, researchers were able to mimic specific wavelengths in order to safely harness the therapeutic light rays while eliminating the damaging ones.

Narrowband phototherapy is a safe and effective treatment for autoimmune skin diseases and is considered a first-line treatment for many conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo and eczema. It’s safe enough for pregnant women and children to use, and has none of the serious side effects associated with competing biological drug therapies.

Psoriasis - Excimer Laser Therapy

Quick Facts

  • Effective treatment — symptoms reduced generally in 10-12 treatment sessions (results will vary)

  • Painless and quick treatments

  • Relief without messy creams and daily skin care regimen

  • Covered by Medicare and most major insurance companies

The Excimer Laser produce a highly effective, safe, and painless therapy by delivering a targeted, super-narrow UVB band to affected areas, resulting in effective and rapid improvement without the worry of harmful side effects of invasive, systemic agents.

Blu-U Light Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is an FDA approved treatment for pre-cancerous Actinic Keratosis (AKs). The Levulan® Kerastick plus Photodynamic Therapy using the BLU-U®, blue light illuminator is indicated for the treatment of minimally to moderately thick actinic keratoses of the face or scalp. The 2-part treatment is unique because it uses a light-activated drug therapy to destroy AKs. Actinic keratoses (AKs) are rough, scaly patches on the skin, caused by excessive exposure to the sun, that can sometimes progress into dangerous skin cancers.

Throughout your life, it’s highly likely that one or more skin disorders will affect your face – whether it’s acne as a teenager or sun damage as you grow older. Facial skin problems can occur for a host of reasons, including:

  • Aging

  • Exposure to the sun or other environmental elements

  • Genetics

  • Viral, bacterial, or fungal infections

    • Acne

    • Rosacea

    • Dry Skin

Common Skin Growths

Many common growths develop on people’s skin. While the causes are often poorly understood, it is known that some are associated with aging and others are inherited.

Benign (non-cancerous) lesions are not life-threatening, but people often have these lesions removed for cosmetic reasons. A lesion may be removed for medical reasons if cancer is suspected. When a lesion bleeds or causes pain, inflammation, or irritation, it also is typically removed.

The dermatologists at Alliant Dermatology treat all kinds of skin growths from head to toe.

Common Skin Rashes

Skin rashes are one of the most common reasons people visit a dermatologist. There are numerous types of rashes with many different causes. Some rashes may be caused by an allergic reaction (contact dermatitis); medications; plants; infection or disease; or an ingredient in cosmetics, lotions, soaps, etc.

A rash is characterized by a change in the texture or color of your skin. Many rashes are simply itchy, while others may be painful, such as those that cause blisters or ulcers to form.

Because one rash can resemble another, it’s important to seek treatment from a dermatologist. The providers at Alliant Dermatology will determine the cause of your rash based on its appearance, location on your body, other physical symptoms you may have (pain, fever, etc.), and any irritants you may have been exposed to.

Common Skin Infections

As the body’s largest organ, your skin is typically an effective barrier to internal infection. At times, however, the skin may be host to a number of rashes and other conditions that occur due to the presence of bacteria, fungi, or viruses that can cause skin infections.

The providers at Alliant Dermatology are experts at diagnosing and treating all types of skin infections, particularly those listed below:

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), can spread from one person to another by having genital, anal, or oral sex. STDs are very common, in fact the United States has the highest rate of STDs in the industrialized world.

Since infections are often spread when the infected person has no symptoms, most of the time you cannot tell if someone has an STD. People may not be aware that they are infected and may not discuss it if they are.

    • Syphilis

    • HIV/AIDS-Related Skin Conditions

    • Genital Herpes (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2)

    • Genital Warts (HPV)
